Cindy's Journal

Greetings from Bangor, Maine!  We are one step away from finishing the race!  What a great day!  We had a very long delay in Lewisburg, WV due to fog.  That fog was promised to *not* be there by the locals, but it was.  We got into the air with Evelyn at the controls around 9 AM EDT.  Imagine having 4 miles visibility with 100 foot ceilings.  That's what we had!  It finally burned off and we were on our way.
We landed in Elmira, NY to be greeted by Evelyn's parents.  It was great that they were there to support us and show us a friendly face or two!  The hospitality was wonderful.  We were able to get a great lunch to fuel our tummies for Burlington, VT.  The weather was a little bit dicey as Cindy took the controls for this leg.  The terrain was a little higher than the Midwest and there was a significant storm cell in our way.  We were blessed that we could go northwest around the storm and make it clearly into Burlington.
After a quick turn-around and more weather checking, we all decided to push into Bangor, Maine, where the weather was super and we were ahead of the next set of storms moving in.  It was great as we all caravaned in :).
Our big "story" for the day besides dealing with lots of weather, was coming into Bangor and having our friends from Team 19 be told that they were cleared to land runway 33 behind a "heavy".  For those that might not know, a heavy is a 747!  Landing a small airplane after a big airplane is a scary thing because of the wake turbulence generated.  Jo and Susan did a wonderful job!  We were originally #2 behind them, but they squeezed a twin in before we landed.  So, no wake turbulence for us!
Of course, the night was capped off with a good dinner with teams 10 (from Alaska) and 39 (pilot is from New Zealand!) co-pilot a student at University of Illinois.
Tomorrow it is onto Canada!
